Abstract

Bangladesh has increasingly focused on expanding its digital systems to build a smarter government. ,aiming to increase public transparency and citizen engagement .The objective of this research is to determine the impact of enhanced digital public services and economic growth on national governance. The study was conducted by using a secondary dataset collected for the period of 1995 to 2024 from the World Development Indicators (WDI) and World Governance Indicators (WGI). Quantitative analysis was performed using MS Excel 2019 . The research applies descriptive statistics, trend analysis and to evaluate the correlation between internet usage and other main variables, a Pearson correlation analysis was implemented where, Gross Domestic Product (GDP ) r=0.98, Electricity (ELC) r=0.923, Government Effectiveness(GE) r=0.693 were calculated .The results represent a significant socio-economic condition and technological development. Internet penetration grew from 0.0008% to 53.42%. Fixed broadband subscriptions rose from 0.03 to 8.09 subscriptions per 100 people reflecting digital growth. The access of electricity increased from 15.0% to 99.5%, the adult literacy rate increased from 51.8% to 79.0%. The percentage of urban population also rose from 21.66% to 32.68%. GDP per capita increased from US$309.46 to US$2,716.49 in the study period, indicating improved economic performance .However, the governance indicators are still too weak. The average score of government effectiveness is(−0.746), rule of law (−0.939), control of corruption (−1.145), voice and accountability (−0.708), and regulatory quality (−0.930) are below average. These findings suggest that Bangladesh achieved exceptional progression in digitalization, economic growth, education, and infrastructure, but the improvement in governance remained weak. In conclusion, expanding internet access and upgrading national digital systems are the vital steps for Bangladesh to establish smart governance.
